What to know before the next one

Seven a side in deep water, four periods, and no touching the bottom for the entire match. Players tread water for an hour while wrestling, swimming sprints and throwing a ball at a goal. Brutally demanding and mostly invisible below the surface.

The events that matter

Olympic Games water polo — Every four years. Men's tournament since 1900, women's since 2000.
World Aquatics Championships — Every two years. The world titles.
World Aquatics Water Polo World Cup — Every year. The international circuit.
LEN Champions League — Every season. The elite European club competition.

Five things to watch the first time

Watch what you cannot see. Most of the contest is under the water, which is why fouls seem to come from nowhere.
Watch the centre forward with their back to goal. Everything is built around them, and they are being held constantly.
Watch the exclusion fouls. A twenty-second exclusion gives the other side a six-on-five, and elite teams score on most of them.
Watch the shot clock. Thirty seconds to shoot means possessions have a rhythm.

Where it is played

Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Italy, Spain, Greece, Montenegro, the United States and Australia. Hungary's water polo history is one of the deepest in any sport.

Who plays it, and from what age

Swimmers usually cross over around ten to twelve. It is a major school sport in South Africa, particularly in the Western Cape and Gauteng.

Who sets the standard

Hungary, Serbia, Croatia and Italy in the men's game; the United States, Spain and Australia in the women's.

The South African angle

Water polo is a significant South African school and university sport with a strong inter-schools culture, and national teams compete at African and world championship level.

Words you will hear

an exclusion — A twenty-second removal from play. The main penalty.
the centre forward — The attacker stationed in front of goal with their back to it.
eggbeater — The leg technique that keeps a player high in the water without hands.
a six-on-five — The power play created by an exclusion.
