The field guide

What to know before the next one

Seven a side on a full-size pitch, seven-minute halves, and a whole tournament in two days. All the space of rugby with a third of the players, so the game is about the gap rather than the collision.

The events that matter

Five things to watch the first time

Where it is played

Fiji, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, Australia, France, Ireland and the United States. Fiji's record relative to its population is one of sport's great anomalies.

Who plays it, and from what age

Widely used as a school and university format because it needs fewer players. Careers are shorter than in fifteens because the running load is extreme.

Who sets the standard

Fiji, New Zealand and South Africa in the men's game; New Zealand and Australia in the women's.

The South African angle

The Blitzboks are one of the most successful teams in the circuit's history, and the Cape Town Sevens is one of its best-attended rounds. Sevens has also been an important route into the professional game for South African players.

Words you will hear

Want to try it yourself?

Sevens tournaments and touch leagues run all summer.

The skills this sport is built on

Drop-kick conversion · Restart catch · Offload / pass in contact · Footwork / beating a man · Cover tackle

Facts here are the best we could verify, and estimates say so. Spotted something out of date? Tell us and it gets fixed.

Then take it beyond rugby sevens

Your Sports Passport collects a SpectatorIQ stamp for every code you learn — and the Couch-to-Club bridge turns watching into playing whenever you're ready.
