The field guide

What to know before the next one

Off-road cycling in several forms. Cross-country is the Olympic discipline — laps of a technical circuit for about ninety minutes. Marathon events run 60 to 120 kilometres, and enduro is timed descents with untimed climbs between them.

The events that matter

Five things to watch the first time

Where it is played

Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Britain, Italy, the United States, Brazil, New Zealand and South Africa.

Who plays it, and from what age

Junior racing from about twelve; masters categories by five-year band well past sixty. It is one of the most popular adult participation sports in South Africa.

Who sets the standard

Switzerland and France in cross-country; South Africa is a genuine force in marathon and stage racing.

The South African angle

Mountain biking is arguably South Africa's biggest participation cycling discipline. The Cape Epic is a world event held here, the Attakwas and Wines2Whales are national institutions, and South Africa has produced marathon world champions.
