What to know before the next one

Three Olympic disciplines with one thing in common: two athletes, one of them a horse. Dressage is precision and communication; show jumping is clearing fences without faults; eventing combines both with a cross-country test.

The events that matter

Olympic Games equestrian — Every four years. The only Olympic sport where men and women compete directly against each other in every event.
FEI World Championships — Every four years. The world titles across disciplines.
Badminton and Burghley Horse Trials — Every year. The two most prestigious five-star eventing competitions.
FEI Jumping World Cup — Every season. The indoor show jumping circuit.

Five things to watch the first time

In show jumping, watch the time as much as the fences. Jump-offs are decided by tight turns, not clear rounds alone.
In dressage, watch the horse's ears and mouth. Calmness is being judged as much as the movements.
In eventing cross-country, watch the rider's line to each fence. Choosing the long safe route costs time but avoids a refusal.
Watch the horse's landing stride after each fence. Recovering rhythm quickly is the mark of a good round.

Who plays it, and from what age

Riders often start as young children. Because it is a partnership rather than pure athleticism, equestrian has the oldest Olympic competitors of any sport — riders in their sixties have won medals.

Who sets the standard

Germany in dressage; Britain and Germany in eventing; the Netherlands, Sweden and Britain in jumping.

The South African angle

South Africa has an active equestrian scene with national championships across disciplines and a long endurance riding tradition, though quarantine and transport costs make international competition difficult.

Words you will hear

a refusal — The horse stopping at a fence. Penalties, and two usually means elimination.
a rail — A pole knocked down. Four faults.
the jump-off — A shortened timed round between clear rounds.
piaffe — A dressage movement — trotting on the spot.
