What to know before the next one

Not physical, entirely a sport in every other sense — federations, ratings, world championships, doping controls and clocks. Two players, sixty-four squares, and complete information: nothing is hidden and there is no luck.

The events that matter

World Chess Championship — Roughly every two years. A long match between the champion and a challenger who won the Candidates tournament.
Chess Olympiad — Every two years. The team world championship, with nearly every federation on earth entering.
Candidates Tournament — Roughly every two years. Eight players compete to challenge for the world title.
World Rapid and Blitz Championships — Every year, usually December. The fast formats, and by far the most watchable.

Five things to watch the first time

Watch the clock as much as the board. Most decisive games at the top are decided by time pressure, not by a brilliant move.
Watch the evaluation bar if the broadcast has one, but be sceptical — it shows what an engine would do, not what a human can find.
Watch the players' faces at the moment they realise. Chess broadcasts are unusually good at catching it.
In blitz and rapid, watch the ending. Three minutes each means genuine chaos.

Where it is played

Universal. India, the United States, Russia, China, Norway, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran are the strongest federations, and India's junior depth is currently unmatched.

Who plays it, and from what age

Children commonly start at five or six, and the sport has produced grandmasters aged twelve. Unlike almost every other sport, players remain competitive into their fifties and beyond.

India, the United States, China, Russia and Norway.

The South African angle

Chess South Africa runs a large schools programme, and chess is one of the most widely played competitive activities in South African schools, reaching learners in areas with no sports facilities at all.

Words you will hear

a gambit — Deliberately giving away material early for position or time.
zugzwang — Being forced to move when every move makes your position worse.
the endgame — The final phase with few pieces left, where technique matters more than tactics.
Elo — The rating system that ranks every registered player in the world.
