The field guide

What to know before the next one

A judged sport, not a lifting one. Competitors are scored on muscular size, symmetry, proportion and conditioning while holding mandatory poses. The training is only half of it — the last weeks before a show are about presentation.

The events that matter

Five things to watch the first time

Where it is played

The United States is the commercial centre; strong scenes exist across Europe, Brazil, South Africa, Egypt, India and the Gulf.

Who plays it, and from what age

Most competitors start training in their late teens and compete from their twenties into their forties, with masters categories beyond that. Categories separate men's and women's divisions by height, weight and physique class.

Who sets the standard

The United States has produced most Mr Olympia winners; Egypt, Iran, Brazil and Britain have all produced recent champions.

The South African angle

South Africa has a well-established federation scene with provincial and national championships feeding into international amateur competition, and a substantial fitness industry behind it.

Words you will hear

Any gym is the start; regional shows run novice classes built for first-timers.
